It's been over a week since Es died. Last Saturday I was walking aimlessly down 4th Street in Berkeley after doing some window shopping at Cody's. The Milo Foundation had a mobile adoption center set up outside of George, the bobo pet store. I saw a little tuxedo female with a white blaze on her back leg very like Esmeralda's, and my heart stopped. Without really thinking much, I decided to take her and her all-black sister home with me. So now we're eight, six cats, one dog, one human. The new kittens are not Esmeralda - they lack the elegance and self-possession she had from the first moment I saw her - but they are lovely little cats, and the house is happier with them here.
