"Old age is a slow surprise" So says Russell Banks, our national poet of what can't be helped. I've been thinking about that a lot lately. When we think of ourselves, we never think of ourselves as old. My father is so outraged about being old that he simply prefers not to believe it, despite copious evidence to the contrary; despite the fact that his unbelief is quite probably dangerous to his continuing to be at all. And there doesn't seem to be very much I can do about this. He was never very fond of surprises.
