Saturday, September 25, 2004 Here, this afternoon:
From the KnightRidder Washington Bureau:
Friday, September 24, 2004 From Jeff Danziger, the state of the campaign:
Polls are tricky, but the latest from the Wall Street Journal: But increasing numbers think that expelling the Iraqi dictator wasn't worth the cost, and that there's no clear plan to pacify Iraq. Just 40% said that "removing Saddam Hussein from power ... was worth the number of U.S. military casualties and the financial cost," while 52% said it wasn't -- the biggest gap in the year since the question was first posed.posted by jeev | 9:05 AM | Thursday, September 23, 2004 For Ray Charles' birthday:
Wednesday, September 22, 2004 Frames of reference:Thus, violence killed 300 Iraqis last week, the equivalent proportionately of 3,300 Americans. What if 3,300 Americans had died in car bombings, grenade and rocket attacks, machine gun spray, and aerial bombardment in the last week? That is a number greater than the deaths on September 11, and if America were Iraq, it would be an ongoing, weekly or monthly toll.posted by jeev | 9:41 AM | Tuesday, September 21, 2004 Ah, so that's the plan - keep killing 'em until they get tired:At some point the Iraqis will get tired of getting killed and we’ll have enough of the Iraqi security forces that they can take over responsibility for governing that country and we’ll be able to pare down the coalition security forces in the country.Yes, Rummy "all them Arabs look alike" actually said that. Via Atrios. posted by jeev | 11:57 AM | Monday, September 20, 2004 More from Mr. Wolcott:Ben Ferguson can snicker that if John Kerry had incurred real injuries he'd be in a nice wheelchair today and the middleaged white fools sitting in the bookstore don't even raise a peep, which makes you wonder if ten years from now it'll be open season on any American vet from the Iraq campaign who's missing limbs or carrying shrapnel and gets out of political line. There is a myth that the Left spat on returning Vietnam vets in the Seventies. Well, the Right spits on Vietnam vets every day with impunity, and will spit on future vets. Conservatives support the military only in the vague abstract; beneath their patriotic bluster and sentimentality, they basically think soldiers are chumps, risking their lives when they could be staying home, making money, and carving out a neat career, as Ben has done.posted by jeev | 5:29 PM | From Anil Dash:
Sunday, September 19, 2004 Woke this morning to the first rainstorm of the season, early this year. At first it could have been the drizzly, damp residue of a particularly heavy fog that had rolled through in the night, but by the Bay Bridge, on the way to Sunday at the Beach with Sophie, it had turned into a headlights bright, wipers on high downpour.By the time we arrived at the beach, the squall had moved on and the light was so stunningly crisp and clear and sparkling it almost took your breath away. The rain had done its work. Sometimes, in the midst of worry over jobs and politics and family, I forget this. Every season has its beauty. posted by jeev | 5:51 PM |
