This has been a very difficult week. Very. But in the midst of the very hard stuff, there has also been very, very good news. The small person for whom I went Baby Gap shopping a couple of weeks ago has decided to join us here. Among the many messages I've recently received on my phone, the one that I've saved and played over and over again is this brief one: "I'm just calling to tell you that there's a new little person in the world." And, yes, Lucybean is wearing one of the results of the shopping spree. You can see why I couldn't resist.

I am very sorry to have to report that my mom died this afternoon as a result of the injuries she sustained in the fire at her house. I was there, as were other family members and friends. It was, under the circumstances, a good passage.
This is the thing, though. I talked to her three days ago, on Christmas. She was in excellent spirits, had had a good holiday, and was enjoying the snow that had recently covered the Midwest. And now I'm getting ready to go to her funeral. Life is so unpredictable. Anything can happen at any minute. There are no guarentees. If you love someone, please tell them, now.

This is about my mom and step-dad:A neighbor, assisted by passers-by, pulled an elderly couple from their burning Butler-Tarkington home on Sunday afternoon, witnesses and authorities said.
Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Gregg Harris said the woman was in critical condition at Wishard Memorial Hospital; the man was in serious condition. Pray for them, keep them in your thoughts.
