I linked to this
Economist article about perceptions of America over → there, in the del.icio.us column, a couple of days ago. But this graphic just sums up a lot for me. The Pew Global Attitudes Project asked people all over the world this question: “Suppose a young person who wanted to leave asked you to recommend where to go to lead a good life—what country would you recommend?” And this is what they said:

America chosen only by Indians

The Economist adds: "Other people think Americans are hard-working and inventive, yes. But in most countries, more than half think of them as greedy and violent and, in the Middle East, as immoral."

Siva Vaidhyanathan has a great
article in Salon today about the potential fallout from the Supreme Court's utterly misguided Grokster "inducement rule" decision. Look at this ad from the 80's, at the heart of an earlier version of this same inane fight:

Sony ad proclaiming 'Watch Whatever Whenever'

Sure looks like "inducement" to me.

Something we're good at: building more
prisons.
Faced with unremitting violence, the United States is building new detention areas at Iraqi prisons including the notorious Abu Ghraib.

President George Bush had declared that Abu Ghraib would be torn down in a symbolic gesture after shocking pictures emerged of Iraqi inmates being abused and tortured by American forces.

But the continuing insurgency and rising death toll has meant that not only can the US not hand over Abu Ghraib to the new Iraqi government, according to a planned timetable, but other prisons including Camp Bucca in the British-controlled south of the country are being expanded.
